Printed packaging depends on the print process, the substrate and the converting method together. A carton, a flexible pouch and a rigid box need different machines, and a company that lists all three may print one and place the others elsewhere. This page describes how we search for a packaging manufacturer, and what the comparison and source log contain.
A packaging order is defined by format, substrate, print process and converting method together, and a company listing several formats does not necessarily show equipment for each. The factory-or-trader assessment therefore asks which steps a company shows machines or a plant for, and who is stated to hold the dies and plates.
A press list on a company's own site is the company's own statement, not evidence of capacity; the review notes when it is the only source.
Public sources cannot show colour accuracy on press. That is tested by a pre-production sample and is outside this service.
The points below are applied to each candidate in the longlist before it reaches the shortlist.
Folding carton, corrugated, flexible film, rigid box or label: a printer stating one format is not assumed to do the others.
Offset, flexographic, gravure or digital, plus the finishing options stated, because the process sets the economical run size.
Who pays for and who holds dies and plates, and what the company states about reusing them elsewhere, framed as a question for you to ask.
Whether board or film is bought by the maker and what it states about food-contact use or recycled content, as stated by the company, with the issuer named on the document.
Minimum run per design, how artwork and dielines are stated to be checked and how many variants one run can include.
The search narrows to flexible-film converters with a stated food-contact record; the questions list is document-based.
Folding-carton printers with finishing options such as foil or embossing are compared, with per-variant minimums.
Digital and short-run capability is the deciding attribute, and a larger printer's headline minimum may rule it out.
