RFQ comparison for printed packaging

A packaging RFQ starts with a dieline and ends with a proof you approve.

Printers quote on what you show them. If a dieline, a board, a colour count and a finish are not stated, each printer fills the gaps differently and the quotes diverge. This page describes how the request is written so that print jobs are priced on one specification, with tooling and proofing terms visible.

The research question

Have all printers priced the same pack, the same print, and the same one-off set-up?

The RFQ carries a dimensioned dieline, board or film description, print colours and coverage, finishing and pack count per carton. It asks every printer to price tooling and plates separately from the piece price and to state which tiers they quote. The comparison then shows piece prices on matching quantity tiers, and one-off items beside them.

A printer who offers a nearby but different board is shown as an alternative row, not as an equal answer.

Terms the RFQ asks printers to state

Terms the RFQ asks printers to state

Piece price on defined tiers

The run lengths you give, and any tier a printer adds.

Tooling and plates

What is charged once, who owns the tooling and how long it is kept.

Overs and unders

The quantity tolerance a printer applies to delivered runs.

Proof stages

Digital proof, physical sample or press check, and what changes after approval.

Repeat orders

Whether set-up repeats on a reorder, as the printer states it.

Situations

Situations

A brand with long runs of one carton

Tier steps and the cost of changing run length matter most, and the tier table reflects that.

A business ordering small custom batches

Digital printing and short-run offers are separated from offset quotes so they are not mixed.

A buyer changing printer

Existing tooling terms are a first row, since they decide what moving costs.

Step by step

Sequence of the work

01

Review your pack brief

Gaps in dimensions, material or print information are listed as questions for you to settle.

02

You issue the RFQ

One sheet, one set of tiers, one answer format, sent by you to the printers you choose.

03

Compare on tier and on set-up

Piece price and one-off items are shown separately, then a total for each run length.

04

Prepare follow-up questions

Missing tolerance or ownership terms become questions for you to put to the printers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the packaging?+

No. We work from your dieline and artwork; design is not part of this service.

Can you find printers to send the RFQ to?+

If you have none, supplier search is the separate service that produces a shortlist.

Do you assess print quality?+

No. Print quality is judged from proofs and samples.
