Beyond marketplaces

The marketplace showed you one slice. Here is what sits outside it.

Marketplaces are a convenient place to start, and they show only the firms that chose to list there, in the form the platform sets. The question is who supplies the same product without relying on a listing: makers with their own website, firms in trade directories, members of industry associations. You receive a shortlist drawn from those sources, set against the marketplace candidates you already have.

The decision question

What does a search outside the marketplace add to the candidates I already hold?

The marketplace candidates you already hold become reference rows. The search then looks where the platform does not: company websites ranking for the product terms, sector directories, association member lists, fair catalogues and press mentions. Overlaps are noted, since the same firm can appear on both sides under different names.

This page does not say marketplaces are worse. It says they are one source, and that comparison across sources shows whether the shortlist depends on a single platform's presentation.

What changes when you leave the platform

What changes when you leave the platform

Fewer standard fields

A marketplace gives every seller the same fields. Outside it, each firm presents itself differently, so the matrix is built by normalising what firms publish, and blanks can be more frequent.

Fewer signals from the platform

Badges and ratings are absent. In their place the report uses public records and the firm's own material, labelled by source.

A different contracting position

Off-platform, terms are the firm's own. The report notes where terms are published and where they are not.

Situations where a wider search differs

Situations where a wider search differs

A buyer with only one seller on a platform

The search tests whether the product is also made or stocked elsewhere, so the single listing stops being the only comparator.

A buyer who finds many identical listings

Repeated listings can trace to a few makers. The report groups them by apparent origin and labels this as inference.

A buyer whose volumes exceed what listings state

The screen looks for firms that publish larger-order or contract-supply terms, as stated.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you advise against using marketplaces?+

No. The research compares sources; the choice of channel is yours.

Will the shortlist exclude firms on marketplaces?+

No. They remain candidates if they match the criteria; the point is to add what the platform did not show.

Is the supplier checked for existence?+

Candidates are read against public records as part of the screen. A dedicated check before ordering is a separate service.
