Longlist screening

You have the names. The work is deciding which ones stay.

This page is for the buyer who already did the collecting: a spreadsheet of suppliers from a trade fair, an inbox of replies, a colleague's old list. The question is how to cut it down in a way that can be explained to whoever signs off. You provide the list; the research tests each entry against criteria written down first and returns a shortlist with a reason beside every name that dropped out.

The decision question

On what grounds does each name stay or go?

A long list may mix entries gathered with different goals: a manufacturer here, a distributor there, a name from a conversation with no details at all. The first task is normalising the entries, so each is described on the same fields. Only then are criteria applied, and each exclusion is recorded with the criterion and the source that triggered it.

Entries you supplied are treated as client-provided until they are matched to a public source. Nothing is added from outside your list unless the brief asks for it.

Four ways an entry leaves the list

Four ways an entry leaves the list

It fails a must-have

A stated minimum order above your volume, a missing certificate the brief demanded or a location you excluded. The criterion and its source are quoted.

It cannot be identified

A name with no recoverable website or registered entity in reviewed sources. It is marked unavailable and set aside, not discarded as bad.

It duplicates another entry

Two names can turn out to be the same group or one trading under another's brand. The report merges them and shows why.

It is the wrong kind of firm

A reseller on a list meant for makers, or the reverse. Retained or dropped according to what the brief says it wants.

Step by step

How the cut is made

01

Normalise

Entries are described on the same set of fields, with blanks left visibly blank.

02

Apply the must-haves

Hard criteria only, and every exclusion is written down.

03

Compare what remains

The remaining candidates are set side by side on the weighted points you chose.

04

Return the list with the cut log

Shortlist, matrix, source log and the record of every name that left.

Supplier Search

Who it is for
Importers, retailers and manufacturers who need suppliers for a product they have not sourced before or want to replace

What this is, and isn't

Research reports what can be established from public and provided sources. It is not a guarantee about a counterparty's future conduct and not legal advice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you add new suppliers to my list?+

Only if the brief says so. By default the screen works on the entries you provide.

How short will the shortlist be?+

As short as your criteria and the sources make it. The report states which criterion removed most entries.

What if my list has almost no details?+

Then many entries are reported as unavailable. That is a finding, and it tells you what to collect first.
