Channel map

Where do competitors meet their buyers?

A product can be good and still be absent from the places buyers look. The question for a company preparing a go-to-market plan or a distributor approach is concrete: through which channels do the competitors in this market actually sell, and which named intermediaries stand between them and the buyer?

The decision question

Which route to the buyer does each competitor use?

For each competitor in the agreed set we establish whether it sells directly, through resellers, through distributors, through marketplaces, or through a mix, and who the named intermediaries are. Evidence comes from the competitor's own where-to-buy and partner pages, from listings on the intermediaries' side, from catalogues and exhibitor material, and from published announcements. A channel that appears only on one side is recorded with that caveat, because a distributor page may be out of date.

Which intermediary suits you is a separate step. Finding distributors for your own product is the Distributor and Partner Search service.

Who uses this and what they look for

Who uses this and what they look for

A consumer brand planning retail entry

Looks at which retailers and online platforms competing brands appear on, and how their presence differs by platform.

An industrial manufacturer

Looks for the technical distributors and integrators that already carry rival lines, since they may be the gatekeepers.

A software vendor

Looks at resale partners, marketplaces and integration listings rather than physical distribution.

Contract terms

Margins, exclusivity and volumes between a competitor and its distributor are not public and are not guessed.

Actual sales through a channel

A listing proves presence, not volume. The map does not rank channels by importance.

Step by step

How a channel is established

01

Read the competitor's own claim

Where-to-buy, partner and reseller pages, sales documents and press notes are recorded as what the company says about its channels.

02

Look from the intermediary's side

The same relationship is searched in distributor line cards, catalogues and marketplace listings. A relationship seen on both sides is stated as read in two sources.

03

Note the territory and the product line

A distributor may carry one range in one region only. The map records scope where it is stated and marks it unavailable where it is not.

04

Highlight overlaps and empty ground

The summary lists intermediaries shared by several competitors and segments with no visible presence, labelled as inference.
