Why This Matters
What a Supplier Quote Often Doesn't Tell You
A quote that looks complete on the surface can still leave real costs and risks unaddressed.
Missing destination charges
A quote that looks complete can leave out destination port fees, handling charges, or last-mile delivery — costs that only appear after you've already paid the supplier.
Duties and VAT not accounted for
Import duty and VAT are calculated on the customs value, not the invoice price — and they're often missing entirely from a supplier's shipping estimate.
Incoterm ambiguity
"DDP" means different things to different suppliers. Some genuinely handle customs clearance and VAT; others use the term loosely and leave you exposed at the border.
Unrealistic shipping claims
Transit times or freight rates that look too good to be true usually are — often because a key cost or condition is quietly excluded.
FBA-specific requirements missed
If you're shipping to Amazon, a generic freight quote may not account for FBA prep, labeling, or carton compliance — leading to rejected shipments at the fulfilment centre.
A Common Starting Point
Got a DDP Quote From an Alibaba Supplier?
A supplier quote received through Alibaba that says “DDP” isn't automatically wrong — but the label alone doesn't tell you what's actually included.
Suppliers use the term "DDP" with different degrees of precision. Before you pay, it's worth checking whether the quote actually clarifies:
- Whether import duty and VAT are genuinely included, or just implied by the label
- Whether destination or local handling charges are covered, or billed separately later
- Who is responsible for customs clearance and named as importer of record
- What chargeable weight or volume the freight portion of the price was actually based on
- Exactly what the Incoterm wording on the quote says — not just what the supplier told you verbally
- What is genuinely covered by the "all-in" price, and what would trigger an extra charge
If you're not sure, send us the quote — Alibaba or otherwise — and we'll review the numbers, Incoterm wording and potential gaps for €99, before you send payment.

- Freight pricing structure looks plausible but needs confirmation
- Importer / customs responsibility should be clarified before payment
Questions to ask the supplier
- 1.Is import VAT included in the quoted DDP amount?
- 2.Who will appear on the customs declaration?
- 3.Are destination handling charges included?
- 4.What chargeable weight / volume was used?
- 5.Can the final customs documentation be provided after clearance?

The Outcome
A Clear Verdict — Not Just Data
Every assessment ends with one of three plain recommendations.
You don't get another freight quote. You get a decision.
Proceed
The quote is sufficiently clear to move forward based on the information reviewed.
Renegotiate
The shipment may be workable, but specific costs, terms or responsibilities should be clarified first.
Don't Pay Yet
Important issues remain unresolved and should be addressed before sending payment.
Based on the information you provide — a freight and logistics assessment, not a legal, customs or compliance determination, and not a guarantee of any outcome.
