Used containers at Nuremberg: southern Germany's combined transport hub
bayernhafen calls its Nuremberg terminal the central hub for combined transport in southern Germany, and says it has been at the limit of its capacity since entering service in 2006. A terminal under that pressure is one where space for an empty unit is worth knowing about.
Capacity that is being rebuilt
In March 2024 the port company reported 318,471 TEU for 2023 and a plan to lift crane capacity by about a fifth, to 400,000 TEU, with new cranes expected by the end of 2026. Trade press later reported 478,680 TEU for the whole bayernhafen network in 2025. Those are the operator's own accounts and a plan, not stock.
Why the terminal matters for the equipment
We do not handle cargo. For a container resale, a busy rail terminal is where an owner decides whether to keep a unit, move it or sell it. We ask where it stands, in what condition and under whose release, and we leave the logistics to the parties.
One operator, electrified tracks
bayernhafen names TriCon Container-Terminal Nürnberg as the operator of the handling facilities and says the terminal's connections are fully electrified. We act for neither. The operator's name tells a buyer whom to ask about gate and release rules.
Owners and buyers in Franconia and Bavaria
Owners name type, quantity and release date. Buyers in the region register what they need and how far they can collect. Hamburg has its own page, and a request can be compared with it by actual distance.
